Where To Go On Your Safari Holidays

By Jack Wogan

Africa - a magic word, a word that triggers anyone's imagination. It refers to an untamed continent which had the strength to preserve its wildlife, the row instincts and the natural beauty. Nowadays "civilized" people turn to Africa to encounter life as harsh and rough as it was at the beginning of humanity. A visit to the wild continent may be what we need in order to learn the lesson of what is truly valuable in this world. It is not only our romantic nature that brings many of us to Africa. It is also our adventurous spirit, our search for adrenaline.

In order to satisfy these needs, Africa created the safari - one of the few profitable branches of its economy. People used to come to safari to hunt big game. In time, things have changed and many tourists now take such vacations simply to observe and enjoy wildlife. This is an activity which can be done in a balloon, on a horseback, from a car, on a river or while taking a long walk. If you find yourself seduced by one of these forms of safari, all you have to do is pick an African destination for your holiday.

The offer is wide. There are many reserves and national parks all over Africa. They should be your main target if you are interested in safari. Take Serengeti, in Tanzania, for example. This vast national park is the place that mammals prefer when it comes to migration. Therefore it is the ecosystem where the largest migration of mammals can be observed. Not bothered by too many tourists, the fastest animal on land - the cheetah - takes advantage of the huge open ground of Serengeti in order to chase its prey.

Kenya should also be taken into consideration as a wonderful safari holiday destination. The grand wildebeest migration can be admired here, in the Masai Mara Reserve. Zambia too has a national park to be proud of: South Luangwa National Park. The wildlife and the birds here are so various that you will not be able to really enjoy them unless you choose to walk instead of drive. Safari gives you now the possibility to take some of your home comfort with you. That is if you consider the lodges you can find close to the wildlife reservations or parks.

Choosing such a lodge near the Kruger National Park in South Africa may prove an outstanding idea. You will benefit from a location on a private game reserve and from the possibility to drive around the preserved area which houses Africa's largest number of mammal species. This means you will be able to observe all the Big Five game animals: the lion, rhinoceros, African elephant, cape buffalo and leopard. For bird lovers there are around 500 species of birds flying all over the Kruger National Park while the waters abound in crocodiles and hundreds of other reptiles.
