Simple Methods Of Mosquito Control

By Theresa Alvarez

If requesting mosquito control Miami locals can choose from a few options offered by the insect control division of Miami-Dade County. Its long term goal is to aid the public in fighting the pesky populations, and since 1935 it has been using methods that better the quality of life for residents. In the warm tropical environment of Miami, almost forty-five different species of the insect exist.

Those that are a considerable threat to the health of the public must be regulated quickly and regularly. Major diseases such as West Nile, Malaria and Encephalitis can be passed on through the insect causing many people to rapidly fall ill. Dusk and Dawn, DEET, Dress, and Drainage are the 'five D's' - methods stressed by the County for residents to use to fight the insect populations on their own property.

The method of control residents see most often is truck spraying. Spray trucks give off a fine mist of insecticide that is effective for killing localized concentrations of insects. This spraying is not performed during the day time, because it may kill off insects that are beneficial, such as the honey bee which helps pollinate plants.

Clearing drainage gutters of debris will prevent eggs from being laid in stagnant water within. Always repair windows and doors to prevent bugs from entering the home and infesting. Containers left outdoors such as recycling bins, and pools can also collect water and if they must be filled for long periods of time, be sure to treat the water properly so it will be unsuitable for insects.

Standing water and damp soil that may flood are perfect targets for insects to lay eggs in. These eggs can be hatched in less than a week and insects may quickly develop into adulthood. This problem can be avoided by simply preventing the ideal conditions needed for the eggs to survive.

Clothing which fits loosely, long-fitting and light-colored is most helpful in avoiding bites. The insects are most active at dawn and dusk, so going outdoors around this time is not advised unless necessary. The most effective self-spray repellent used is DEET which is very useful for warding them off but may be harmful to infant children.

To report a problem that requires mosquito control Miami residents may report the problem online, or dial 3-1-1 on their phone. A call specialist will assist the resident by asking a list of questions in order to better understand the situation. The resident will then be a case investigation number and the matter will be handled appropriately as soon as possible.
