Christmas Time in the Canaries

By Catherine McCulloch

Although traditionally Christmas is spent huddled around the fire in your winter woollies drinking mulled wine in an attempt to warm up, have you ever thought about taking a break from the norm? We've rounded up a list of things to do in the Canary Islands this Christmas.

You don't have to be in the UK to enjoy a traditional Christmas meal. Book in Christmas lunch as soon as you arrive or choose a self-catering mytravel deal and snap up a turkey and all the trimmings from your local supermarket.

Another benefit of going to the Canaries during the holiday season is that the shops stay open, and don't close early like most of the ones in the UK do. Everything should be open as usual on December 25 in case you should need something. However, swimming with dolphins and climbing volcanoes are also fantastic ways to spend the celebratory occasion.

It's only right that if you are celebrating Christmas in Spain, you should enjoy some of their festive traditions. Depending on which island you are visiting, you can expect huge firework displays, carnivals and if you are still around come January 6th, you can enjoy the Three King processions which celebrate the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem.

Whether all you want is an escape from the Christmas madness back home, a bit of winter sun and rest and relaxation by the pool or a glimpse into how the Spanish celebrate everyone's favourite time of year, the Canary Islands are a great option and the locals will welcome you with open arms.
