5 Ways To Deal With An Injury

By Katherine Crawford

Distinguishing between a minor injury and a major injury can be very difficult for the fitness aficionado. Even worse, a minor injury can turn into a major injury within the blink of an eye.

So here is how to deal with an injury when trying to get toned:

1. Don't work through the pain: If you feel sudden pain stop everything you are doing. Many injuries can be contained with this simple, yet aggressive approach. If you adopt a no pain no gain attitude towards injuries, you can potentially alter your body forever.

2. Ice it: I know this sounds like I'm beating a dead horse, but the truth is that coldness can prevent a moderate injury from progressing into something nasty. You see, tendons and ligaments have a very poor blood supply. And swelling further reduces the supply of blood.

3. Get hot: Hot temperatures are great for getting the injured tissue pliable and subsequently, for getting blood into the affected area. Now always apply cold first, then apply some heat. Once the swelling has gone done a lot, you can cycle between the two. Always remember that blood will speed up the healing process.

4. Elevate the limb if necessary: If you feel that the injury is still creating a high amount of pain, you can elevate the limb which will further prevent swelling. Obviously this approach creates the most inconvenience, but it's worth doing if you suspect a serious insult to your body.

5. Don't hesitate for one second to see a sports medicine doctor: Keep in mind that you need to see a specialist. A primary care doctor can miss a serious injury more often than you think. This has happened to me and I can say that it's not fun at all.

Don't let a minor injury progress into something serious that requires more time, money and effort to fix. Even worse, don't put yourself in a position of needing surgery. So take action sooner rather than later, because later usually never comes!
