Is New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Extract The Newest Wondrous Super Food For Longevity?

By V K Rajagopalan

The New Zealand green lipped mussel has been an incredibly popular food source in New Zealand since the dawn of time already. It's a well established industry which is worth almost three hundred million NZ dollars. In general, mussel farms yield roughly 10 tons of mussels per hectare. In the case of protein production, mussel farms are roughly two hundred times more efficient compared to onshore livestock farms.

These days the mussels can also be farmed in other countries, but those farmed in New Zealand are believed to be premium quality with regards to quality. This is essentially due to the water quality where they're farmed. The New Zealand administration has some of the most rigorous environmental laws in place, and water samples are taken frequently for independent evaluation in order to look for traces of heavy metals, bacteria, as well as various other bio-toxins.

Alright, we know green lipped mussels from New Zealand are of the finest quality money can buy, but what makes this particular kind of mussel so special?

Green lipped mussels, when consumed fresh, are known to inhibit an "inflammation-supporting" pathway known as 5-lipoxygenase. As a result, several health supplement manufacturers have set about adding concentrated green lipped mussel extract to several of their products which are made to resist diseases such as arthritis.

The large pharmaceutical firms are naturally disputing the anti-inflammatory properties of these mussels, but as we all know, the major pharmaceutical companies dispute all natural home remedies. They tried to convince the world that fish oil supplementation is worthless, yet today even the FDA advocates it.

The mussels can also be a great source of lipids and omega-3 essential fatty acids. A lot of health conscious individuals have even changed from fish oil supplements to green lipped mussel supplements. While oily fish are a richer source of omega-3 fatty acids when compared with mussels, many consider mussel extract to be a safer solution. The reason for this being that only farmed mussels gets used, and as a result, risk of heavy metal contamination is eliminated.

Fish oil on the other hand is produced from fish which are taken from the ocean, and it's a well known fact that heavy metal contamination in the world's seas is getting gradually worse. Even the best fish oil you can find was produced from fish which have at least some amount of toxic contamination. This is the reason why it's always prudent to choose a supplier carefully.

In order to obtain a high quality extract, the New Zealand green shell mussels should really be freeze dried almost at once after they've been harvested. They are then turned into powder in order to allow lipid extraction, and it this extract which you'll get in a high quality supplement. Lower end producers will however frequently purchase the powder that is left over after the lipid extraction process. This powder is of an inferior quality, but naturally it's cheaper, and that equals higher profits. The moral of the story... think very carefully before you decide to buy.
