Texas Vacations Port Aransas For Travelers

Among all the possible destinations for gulf coast Texas Vacations Port Aransas is probably the most beautiful one. It has a small town charm and is surrounded by incredible natural beauty. The town is on Mustang Island, between San Jose Island and Padre Island, with Corpus Christi 30 minutes away.

The town has about 3,775 permanent residents, but the spring break and summer crowd can swell up to well over 60,000 visitors. Visitors can get here using the free Port Aransas Ferry which operates day and night seven days a week and can carry vehicles from the mainland to Mustang Island. There's also a Flexi B bus which runs to and fro from Corpus Christi.

Getting around locally without a car is quite easy too, with a shuttle that goes around the town once every 45 minutes. It covers all the main streets leading to the beach, and visitors can get on and off as required. The shuttle is available from 10 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening.

The beach is obviously among the biggest attractions, especially between the Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day. This means a single uninterrupted 18 mile stretch of shoreline open to vehicles, so visitors can drive on the packed sand beach. Shelling on the beach is a popular pastime, and so is fishing and water sports activities like surfing, windsurfing and jet skiing.

But what sets the island apart is the birding. Bird watchers will delight in the hundreds of migratory and native bird species found here. The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail has five sites here - the Birding Center, Mustang Island State Park, Wetlands Park, South Jetty, and Paradise Pond.

In the Port Aransas Nature Preserve, there are many miles of hiking and biking trails. There are pavilions and a tower here to help nature lovers get a better look at the rare and endangered species like piping plovers. There are also other and more fascinating sights to be seen at attractions like the Marine Science Institute's visitor center.

The island's many attractions and pleasures aside, there are also festivals and events for which travelers often come here every year. The Whooping Crane Festival and Deep Sea Roundup contest come to mind. Visiting during these periods will be a lot of fun, as it will be during spring break, the Memorial Day weekend or Labor Day. The summary here is that as regards Texas vacations Port Aransas is a typical gulf coast island with a beautiful beach, but it also has a lot more natural beauty and birds.
