Year Round Fun Awaits In Sun Peaks BC

By Janine Hester

The newly formed municipality of Sun Peaks BC is an all season playground. Canada's third largest ski resort, and the largest in British Columbia's interior, is growing into a world class destination. Located about 35 miles, or 55 kilometers, north of Kamloops, it has the potential to challenge BC's other great ski resorts. It also has a variety of summer activities. More affordable housing and accommodations will be needed to help make this happen. Additional access is also necessary. With major leaders involved in it's development, it should continue to increase in popularity. Nestled between two mountains, it is a great destination to relax and decompress or rev up and play.

In June 2010 Sun Peaks became the first Canadian mountain resort municipality. The designation gives the community the ability to better control it's destiny. With a permanent population of under 500 people, the area must have controlled growth if it is to become a major tourism player.

With skiing on three mountains, Morrisey, Tod, and Sundance, there is a variety of skiable terrain suitable for all ability levels. With a vertical drop of 2894 feet, or 882 meters, it ranks with some of North America's best. Sun Peaks has average annual snowfall of about 18 feet, or five and a half meters. There is also a terrain park of over nine acres for snow boarders and adventurous skiers.

Summer brings other activities. The par 72 golf course will distract you with its mountain surroundings. Lift access is available for the thrill of downhill mountain biking. The town hosts the Sun Peaks & Region Farmer's Market. This weekly summer event has local foods along with artists and crafts.

More affordable housing is needed for resort employees. Without the workers, the resort can't grow. Additional lodging for visitors is also necessary for this to become a destination resort.

Access is also an issue that needs addressing. A road from the east would make the trip shorter from Banff and Lake Louise. This would bypass the round about drive now necessary from that direction. There are a couple of small airlines offering direct flights from Seattle.

Sun Peaks BC has a bright future. The first mayor is Al Raine who was a major contributor to Whistler's development into the premier resort on the continent. Olympic gold medalist Nancy Greene Raine, the mayor's spouse, is the resort's director of skiing. She out on the slopes most weekends and holidays hosting public mountain tours. Having high profile personalities like these involved can only lead to positive results.
