Top tips for safe motorway driving

By Scarlett Bulge

Many people find driving on the motorway to be very different from and more stressful than driving on other roads - especially newer drivers who will not have had practice on a motorway. This is in spite of the fact that British roads are some of the safest in Europe and around the world. For those who feel a little unsure, there are some basic things you can do to ensure you stay safe on the road.

Firstly, it shouldn't need restating that you should never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Not only is this illegal but it also increases your reaction time, meaning that any decision takes much longer. Generally you should leave two seconds between you and the car in front to give you enough time to react to changes. In worse conditions you should leave even longer, but if the journey isn't essential you should consider delaying it.

As well as illegal drugs, many over the counter or prescription drugs may have side effects that inhibit your driving ability;the most common side effect of which may be that it causes drowsiness. Because motorways often involve longer journeys many people are likely to feel tired on the motorway anyway. Making sure you have had plenty of rest before a journeyshould leave you alert enough to drive. However, taking a break every few hours or if you begin to feel tired should ensure the safety of everyone.

Driving on the motorway is a lot like driving on any road - you should always check your mirrors and indicate if you intend to change lanes for example. Predicting what another driver is about to do based on whether, for example, they are speeding up or slowing down can also be helpful. You should also try to join and leave the motorway at the same speed as the flow of traffic - this means not slowing down until you are firmly off the motorway and onto the sliproad.

New drivers may also want to participate in the Pass Plus scheme so they can have experience on a motorway with a licensed instructor. Following these tips will help you feel more confident on the motorway, allowing for a more enjoyable journey.
