An Insightful Glance At Swiss Army Pocket Knives

For the Swiss Army, common folk as well as those living an ordinary life, the Swiss Army knife is no doubt an unavoidable tool for all types of people. A single model hosts six or more small tools in it. Made possible by the pivot mechanism, the Swiss Army knife is like having six different essential tools that fit into your pocket.

Only Victorinox and Wenger make genuine Swiss Army pocket knives. These products are often red and has Switzerland's emblem on their handles. Everyday, more than 34,000 of their main product are distributed by the company worldwide.

Carl Elsener devised the Swiss Army knife a century ago. He designed it in 1891 and secured a patent on it on July 1897. His major purpose was to provide work opportunities for Swiss people because Switzerland was too way behind during the Industrial Revolution and Swiss citizens were constantly running away from their homeland to look for work. 1800s was the period of Industrial Revolution and Switzerland wasn't doing well economically. People were going abroad to search for greener pastures. So with the mission of giving employment opportunities to the Swiss natives, Carl Elsener developed the Swiss Army knife in 1891, and made it "Swiss original" in July 1897.

Victorinox was named after Carl Elsener's mother, Victoria. Later on, he was contracted as a provider of knives to the Swiss Army which at that time, the product was referred to as "the soldier's knife". It was the US Army that coined the layman term "Swiss Army knife" because its Swiss term was hard for them to utter. At present, Victorinox is run by the Elseners and have more than 900 workers.

The Swiss Army Knife continues to be a staple for the military. It is used by NASA astronauts and has been in space. The Swiss Army Knife is also used by travellers and it has made it to the top of the highest mountain peaks, the deepest parts of the rain forest, and to the Arctic Circle. This tool is inevitable in survivor situations because of its' many uses.

Each knife can consist of tweezers, corkscrew, screw driver, file, scissors, magnifying glass, pen, fish scalier, pliers, wrench, and key chain all fit into a 9 centimetres by 2 centimetres handle.

Even the latest technological facilities are being included and costly Swiss Army Knives come with USB flash drives, digital clocks, LED laser pointers, and even MP3 players.

VICTORINOX makes several different models of their famous Swiss Army knife. There seems to be a tool for every purpose. There are scouting models, fishing models, huntsman knives, executive models and even garden models. Each model contains an array of tools specialized to these individual needs.

The tool has reached worldwide recognition and esteem for its advantages and design. Swiss Army knives are on exhibit in both the Museum of Modern Art and Munich's State Museum of Applied Art.
