How to Get Your Baby To Go To Sleep in 4 easy steps

By Claire James

Have one of those babies that simply refuses to sleep? I am in the same position and as he has grown into a toddler I have found the problems worsening, not getting better. Here are my tips on getting your toddler or baby to go to sleep, especially for that crucial afternoon nap.

Even my baby and toddler will sleep at night. Granted they are restless and are still hard to get down, but the whole process of having dinner followed by a bath and then a bottle helps get them in the right frame of mind for sleeping and this routine gives us all something to follow, but it is during the day that they need their sleep the most, and it's also the time that has no bath or dinner to help.

I have two children who don't like to sleep so I have had to try everything in the book to get them to sleep for their afternoon nap. It's a regular swamp ass trying to figure out exactly what your baby wants but he only thing that has worked for me has been the car, but even this requires some careful planning. Today I want to share with you the tips that have helped me get my children sleeping successfully.

The best way to show you how to make this work first time every time is to list the do's and do not's from what I have learned over the many frustrating and sleepless years of trying to get my baby to go to sleep.

No matter how well you follow my advise, if you do not have the right baby car seat installed then you are stuffed before you begin. Your Baby needs to feel comfortable, safe and secure in his or her seat or they will simply not sleep, end of story. Check out the great range of baby seats, as well as ratings, reviews and recommendations on all models of Baby Car Seats and Covers and guarantee your baby sleeps first time every time.

The first step, and probably the hardest is getting your toddler into the car in the first place. As they get older they fight the idea of sleeping more and more, and they also learn to associate the car with that sleep, so you need to tread carefully. If your Toddler likes Diggers, then suggest going for a drive to find them. Make it fun and they will happily oblige.

The Second step is to be prepared, and with that I give you some great little tips that as you will see can only have come from years of experience.

Babies who have dummies, which I think is pretty much all of them need to have extras. There is a very probable chance that your baby will throw or spit the dummy on the floor of the car during the drive and if you are driving its a lot easier to reach around with a spare than it is to fish around the floor behind you looking for it. This is an especially helpful tip when there are two kids and one can potentially wake the other.

Also make sure you have some of your baby or toddlers favorite music with you. We will get to why this is important in a minute, but just know that the more familiar you can make the environment and surroundings the more chance you have of success with getting your baby to go to sleep.

The Third Step is to think ahead, and by this I mean thinking about the fact that you eventually have to move your baby or toddler back to the house from the car. Make sure to remove their shoes before you leave (I always forget this) or you risk waking them trying to take them off later.

The fourth step - the actual drive is important, and I recommend something really different here. Drive normally, not more slow than usual, and also let your toddler or baby listen to whatever they like. Even if it is upbeat you will quickly learn that a happy baby who is tired will sleep regardless of what is going on around them. SO make it fun for them and low and behold - they will go to sleep on you.

Finally, I do not advise sleeping your child in the car, so when you get back home from the drive, transfer them only after you have prepared their room and turned on the music etc. Now cross your fingers and hope they stay asleep as you move them. And that the neighbours dog does not bark at the worst possible time!!
